Haffner Creek/Cave - Winter 2012

Raf talked me into coming out to try dry tooling for my first time... so he took me out to the Haffner cave. I didn't realize till we got there why everyone in the car laughed when he said that it was a great place for beginners. I got pretty pumped hanging onto the ice tools but it was a lot more fun than I was expecting. Also, the ice formations in the cave were amazing. I've never seen ice take so many different shapes all in one place. Check out the photos here.

Wyoming - June 2011

Wiktor and I decided to do another climbing trip, this time, to check out Ten Sleep and Wild Iris in Wyoming. Since there was just the two of us I wasn't able to get too many pictures of the climbing because I was always either climbing or belaying and I forgot to take pictures of other climbers there when I had the chance (oops). However, I was able to get at least a few interesting scenic shots and documentary images.

Bishop - Feb. 2011

Made the 24+hr drive down to Bishop, California with Wiktor for a little bit of winter bouldering. I had fun hanging out and camping with friends from Calgary and Winnipeg even though it was fairly cold (especially at night) and my shoulder started bugging me again so my climbing was a bit painful/depressing. Wiktor was taking a lot of photos so I was pretty casual about it this trip.

Check out my photos here. Wiktor also made an awesome video from this trip that he posted on his Vimeo page.

Mexico (Cabo) 2011

Care and I made a last minute plan to escape the cold and fly down and meet up with my parents and to spend some time with Christina, Andreas & their dogs who drove down the baja to Cabo San Lucas. It was a fun trip that ended up being really memorable. The snorkeling and scuba diving in Santa Maria Bay (near Cabo San Lucas) were great along with the surfing/boogie boarding at Cerritos Beach (near Todos Santos), I wish I had more photos from those days.

Maple Canyon, Utah - July 2009

Flew down and met up with Devin for some climbing at Maple Canyon and some exploring at Capitol Reef, Utah. Had a good time and saw come cool sites but only got a few climbing pics because we rarely had an extra person to shoot them.

Misc. - Winter '08-'09

Various images, mainly from my trip to PG over Christmas and my ski trip to Panorama in January. I was pretty lucky to see the peak of Mt. Robson during a sunset. It was also pretty amazing to ski into a cloud as the sun was setting at Panorama..

Horne Lake - Aug 2008

1. Climbing

Met up with my friend Ron and his buddy Sheldon for some phenomenal, funky and steep climbing on quality, tufa covered limestone. The cliff is on Vancouver Island near Naniamo, BC.

2. Travel, Camping, Rest Days

We found an amazing free camsite beside a creek off a logging road just past the end of Horne Lake. On our rest days we explored the river, went cliff jumping and explored local caves. I also got some pretty nice photos from the plane on the way home.

Jasper - July Long 2008

May Long in Jasper - May 2008

Went with Caroline to Jasper to visit my parent's again this year. We had a great time checking out the newish climbing area called the Watchtower (which has some of the most amazing limestone I've ever climbed on), mountain biking, visiting Danielle & Dan as well as hiking around from the top of the Jasper Gondola.

Red Rocks/Vegas - March 2007

Got back from Red Rocks near Las Vegas last month. We went down with nearly 20 people and had an awesome week of climbing. One night a few of us went to see the Cirque Du Soliel show called 'Ka' which was simply amazing. Check out my photos in the photos section of my MSN Space.

Christmas in PG - Dec 2006

Had a great time in PG this Christmas. The scenery on the drive was amazing, particularly in the Columbia Ice Fields even though the roads were pretty bad. I spent a couple of days out at Powder King snow boarding and partying in Sheena and Aaron's shack and that was a blast. Finally, I came back to Calgary for New Years where I went to a dance party with Caroline and some friends.

Climbing - Summer 2006

I added a collection of climbing photos from the summer to the 'photos' section of my MSN Space.

The pictures come from several days out in the mountains, mostly around Canmore, Alberta. It was one of the best outdoor climbing seasons ever for me, I made it out almost every weekend. I also did a lot of hard climbs and some were the hardest climbs/boulder problems that I've ever done. It was a great summer, hopefully the next season will be as good.

Back from Manitoba & Saskatchewan- August 2006

Caroline and I just got back from a near 2 week trip to Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Check out our photos in the photo section on My Space.

There were 3 purposes to the trip: 1) to visit the memorial for my friend Curt in his hometown of Rivers, Manitoba; 2) to attend a wedding for one of Care's friends in Regina, Sask; and 3) to have a vacation at Care's family's cabin at Loch Leven Lake in the Cypress hills Provincial Park in Saskatchewan. The photos of the cabin, Rivers and Regina are respectively at the beginning, middle and end of the photo slideshow. I hope you enjoy.

DETAILS

It was sad to visit Curt's home town but we managed to have a fun time for the rest of the trip... despite my worries about going crazy because I'd be away from the mountains for so long. I managed to keep in climbing shape by bouldering on playgrounds and bridges and giant teepees along the way. The T-Rex center in Eastend, Sask was pretty interesting and informative (they found a near complete T-Rex skeleton there back in the 90s). What the prairies lack in interesting landscapes is made up for by their amazing skies. Between Manitoba and Regina we drove through the largest storm I've ever seen and the rainbow/sunset afterwards were stunning.

Back from Colorado - June 2006

Eric Hsiung and I just got back from an awesome month long road trip through Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. I finally have our pictures posted as a slideshow in the photos section on my MSN Space.

TRIP DETAILS

Salt Lake, Utah was cold and snowy so we couldn't climb. Instead, we checked out some of the beautiful and massive Mormon buildings. The people I met were nice but some seemed unaware of anything outside the mormon religion. We were also there on a sunday and it was somewhat scary because there were, what truly looked like, armies of people walking around because they all had the same clothes and haircuts. In general, Salt lake was a very nice city in a very amazing setting with many impressive looking mountains all around.

Moab, Utah had amazing scenery and although it was only a few hours from Salt Lake, it was incredibly hot. We did most of boulder problems there and then checked out the Arches national park before moving moving on.

Rifle, Colorado was an amazing sport climbing area with endless amounts of high quality routes in a canyon that had perfect climbing conditions. I loved the area and could have stayed there the whole trip but we decided to move on after 5 days so that we could do some bouldering and see more of Colorado. I'll definitely have to visit Rifle again.

Estes Park, Colorado was nice but better known for its trad climbing. The area totally reminded me of Squamish, BC but without as many boulders. We found a couple of awesome problems during our 2 day visit there.

Ft. Collins, Colorado was a very relaxed and nice town with a lot of university aged people around. There were endless boulders there but they all faced the sun all day, so it was very hot. Luckily the climbing was on a hill just above a lake where we could jump in to cool off.

Vedauwoo, Wyoming is known for its trad climbing but we went up there for a weekend because all the camp sites in Ft. Collins were reserved and we got kicked out. The boulders were amazingly blank and so there were few that were climbable. We had fun hanging like bats by our feet from a roof crack problem that we found there.

Denver, Colorado was almost identical to Calgary in its geography and layout/look of the city. We checked out the museum and the Body Worlds 2 exhibit there. Body worlds was amazing and disturbing at the same time. It included many real human bodies that were preserved using plastination e.g. replacing body fluids with plastics and then dissecting the body for display. I wasn't allowed to take pictures of the exhibit (except the camels) so you'll have to check the web site out: http://www.bodyworlds.com/en/pages/home.asp to get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Castlerock, Colorado was nice but again very hot. There were no campsites around so we had to sleep in the Walmart parking lots... where we actually had some amazing views of the sunsets.

Boulder, Colorado was a nice town in an beautiful setting. The people there were young, outdoorsy and also easy going. The main problem was that there were no campsites in the city. I stayed in a hostel and met two guys from Oregon who I bouldered with for a couple of days while Eric took off to Peurto Rico for a wedding. We eventually found free camping 30 minutes from boulder in the town of Nederland.

On the way home, we checked out about half of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The geysers and colorful hot springs were impressive and beautiful. It turns out that the colors come from micro organisms that grow at temperatures near the boiling point. The different colors come from different organisms that thrive in certain specific temperatures. I also found out that these organisms are also what make DNA analysis possible because the are used to copy the DNA from a small sample to volumes that are testable.

If you'd like a more detailed journal of my trip, email me and I can send it to you. I kept a log while I was on the road. I hope you enjoy the pictures. They're only a sample of the ~800 or more that we took during the trip.

Back from Yukon & Alaska - May 2006

Just got back from a quick trip from Calgary to Alaska and back. Eric and I had a great time climbing beavers, seeing wildlife, relaxing in hot springs, exploring abandoned mines, fighting mammoths, log-walking across river canyons and more. Check out the photos on my MSN Space.
