I purposely chose the (epileptically) bright colors and chaotic patterns to try and emphasize what he must be feeling (I'm sorry if anyone gets a seisure looking at this, I know it makes me a little dizzy after a while).

I (much) later learned that part of the reason this image makes me dizzy is that several different colors share the same luminosity so the brain has difficulty locating them properly in the image. This is explained in this post and illustrated here.</desc>

He's an attempt to illustrate a pathetic looking slug or worm type creature who doesn't know what it's like to be anything else. He's confused because he doesn't understand why the viewer feels sorry for him. It's really an expression of the cliche "ignorance is bliss"... which was an idea that I was thinking about recently. The figures in the background suggest that despite his lack of ability to do much, he still has friends and/or might even be a leader of some kind.

I thought that I'd feel pretty pathetic if I had no arms and only had teeth on my upper jaw... although I'd sure sleep a lot better if I didn't have arms (mine often go numb at night).

This was another speed paint that I did while watching a movie, I kind of like the black+white contour lines. I had fun painting the background and may try to do some scenic illustrations in the near future.</desc>

Sometimes I wonder about how different we really are from other creatures in the animal kingdom. Clearly, the complexity of our lives, our intelligence and our ability to affect nature sets us apart. But, despite that, many of our day-to-day and moment-to-moment behaviors do still seem to be instinctual/primal, irrational and/or devoted to fulfilling physical needs or a struggle for personal survival or the protection of a loved one (or beloved institution/idea). It was fun coming up with this image though I wish I did a better job of linking the visual elements to this contextual thought.</desc>

Snowstorm Night Driving/Floating Lights Illusion

<location>null</location>
<date>Jun 15, 2010</date>
<desc>I know that this image might seem a bit plain but that's because I'm posting it for the optical illusion more than the illustration quality.

I find that if I look around or stare at this image a bit then the red lights appear to float around and sometimes pulse and/or appear to stretch away from and towards each other in this blue backgroud. After reading the book called 'Vision and Art: Biology of Seeing' I learned that this illusion is created because our visual positioning/tracking system (a.k.a. the 'where' system) is color blind and operates using only the luminosity/brightness information captured by the eye. Since the red lights have a very similar luminosity to the blue background our minds have a difficult time locating them relative to each other and hence they appear to float. I've illustrated this idea a bit more here (if nothing else, you can at least see how noticeably different colors can have very similar luminosity/brightness values).

This illustration is more of an experiment but was originally inspired by my experience of driving through a snowstorm at night last winter where all I could see were the tail lights of the car ahead of me in the moonlit snow.</desc>

Sun Tribute

<location>null</location>
<date>Sep 1, 2010</date>
<desc>This image represents a lot of the things that have been reading and thinking about this summer - things such as my new experiences with having a yard and growing a garden, to reading about golden/fractal geometries found in plants/nature, to reading about ancient cultures and how many of them worshipped or at least had deep appreciation for the sun... to which we must thank for our daily existence (and which seems to be all but forgotten in our complex and technological modern world).

This image also includes some optical illusions and techniques that I read about in the book called 'Vision and Art: Biology of Seeing', such as when you stare at the center of the image, you should see some sort of rays angling out from the center in your peripheral vision (that may even appear to be moving) but they disappear when you try to look at them directly. Also, the concentric oval lines tend to push the eye outwards while the logarithmic spirals draw it in creating a balance/tension that is also analogous to the description of the sun being a balance of explosive nuclear force held back by the inward pull of gravity.</desc>

Revenge of the Leopard Frog

<location>null</location>
<date>Sep 5, 2010</date>
<desc>I went to Loch Leven, SK again this year and like usual there were lots of kids catching frogs. Unfortunately this year, there was one boy who was basically torturing his frog and his parents didnt seem to care. It was hard for us (and a few other people on the beach) to see those things being done to the innocent little creature so Caroline tried to talk him into letting the frog go... but had no luck. Doing anything else would have surely created a scene. I hope that the poor frog survived.

This is a pretty silly sketch but it was good practice coming up with ways to illustrate the trees, branches and water.</desc>

Mind Overdrive

<location>null</location>
<date>Mar 14, 2011</date>
<desc>I created most of this image back in January but got busy and did a few trips so I wasn't able to finish it until now.

In the last couple of years I've read a bit about various eastern inspired ideas relating to the mind and consciousness. Of these ideas, I was most fascinated by the concept of there being multiple components to the mind of which there is a thinking/ego driven part as well as a separate observing part (that can observe one's own thought processes and emotions while they are happening). This image is an attempt to illustrate the thinking/ego portion of the mind enlarged and going wild with the observing component shrunken, pushed off and all but forgotten in the back of one's head. Some have said that most people are unconsciously trapped in this state (to some degree) and that being there can lead to a lot of suffering and unhappiness for one's self and for others around. It is also said that the only way to escape this mind made misery is to use and thereby strengthen the observing portion of the mind… which when fully awakened is usually referred to as becoming enlightened or reaching nirvana (or is at least part of what is needed to reach that state).

I've also had a couple of other goals and influences during the creation of this image. First, I wanted to try using a chaos approach and to make use of a bunch of graphic elements and experiments that I've collected or made recently (a process used by Andrew Jones that inspired me). On top of that, just before I started this piece, my uncle suffered some brain trauma (which thankfully he seems to have recovered from but) which also got me thinking about the mind again.

Beluga Monster

<desc>Got inspired by the beluga whales at the Vancouver Aquarium that we checked out back in March. It was fun trying to come up with a way to illustrate and stylize the water. I used a 3d model as a base for the creature's body. I'm also thinking about making an illustration with several of these types of creatues in it.</desc>

Black Holes

<location>null</location>
<date>Mar 6, 2012</date>
<desc>My mind has been occupied with other things over the last year or so I haven't had much time to create art. That said, I got inspired by space and the stars during a recent trip to Bishop, CA where the night skies were amazingly clear. I've also watched a few space/physics documentaries and had a few conversations about space and astronomy with friends recently.

This image is inspired by the idea of black holes and gravity's effect on objects and space itself even though it more of an abstract space illustration rather than a realistic image (i.e. I don't think you could ever actually see a black hole's shape because it would be surrounded by other objects that would obscure it). Accurate or not, it was fun creating the warped starscapes and thinking about how gravity might affect the clouds of gas. I couldn't decide which version of the image I liked better so I posted both of them together here.</desc>
